Men's Health

Regular Attractions

Each issue of Men's Health contains the following departments and columns:

  • Health: most issues contain one to three articles relating to either physical or mental health. One story might cover the importance of a certain trace mineral in your diet; another might cover ways to reduce stress on the job.
  • Sex and Relationships: typically, two to four articles each month offer tips and advice on improving personal and sexual relationships. These may cover physical issues such as stamina and performance-enhancing drugs, as well as emotional issues related to dating and marriage.
  • Guy Wisdom: this department comprises a broad range of articles, including fashion, travel, careers and employment issues, and other miscellaneous topics.
  • Shorter features include Ask Men's Health, Style Notebook, Tell Men's Health, On the Minds of Men, Health Bulletin, Nutrition Bulletin, Malegrams, Where to Buy, and the Average Guy. Another popular column is Jimmy The Bartender, the column that generates the most reader response each month. Jimmy offers advice on women, work, and other complications of modern life. The column spawned a book, published in 1999, called Jimmy the Bartender's Guide to Life: Advice on Women, Sex, Money, Work and Other Stuff That Screws Up Men's Lives.

One of the elements that distinguishes Men's Health among the men's service magazines is the presence of a strong female voice in its editorial content. Many of the articles in the sex and relationship sections are written by women, with the intention of letting men learn a few things from a woman's perspective. Articles have covered such topics as "Why Women Make Us Wait for Sex," "Lesser-Known Female Erogenous Zones," and "How you Can Tell if Your Girlfriend is Cheating." This female point of view gives the magazine a fresh perspective.

Two of the magazine's most popular regular columns come the pens of women writers. Both take the Q&A format, fielding questions from stymied Men's Health readers.

  • Ask the Girl Next Door: this is the magazine's most popular column, written by freelance author Nicole Beland, who advises men on what women really want, and tells guys what they need to know about women.
  • Bedroom Confidential: this column is written by Debby Herbenick, M.P.H., Ph.D., a sex researcher and educator at Indiana University. She brings the science of sex from the laboratory to the real world-"Whether it's masturbation, the G-spot, or penis size, we'll never run out of research questions," she said.
  • Men's Health Readership

Today, Men's Health magazine boasts a rate base of over 1,800,000, with a total audience of 8,480,000. Its demographics break down as follows:

  • Male: 81%
  • Female: 19%
  • Median Age: 37.0
  • Median Household Income: $70,290
  • The magazine's UK edition was launched in 1995, and it now publishes 33 editions worldwide, distributed to 40 countries. Over the past few years, Men's Health has extended its reach beyond the printed page. It helped pass legislation creating National Men's Health Week; adopted the town of Large, Pennsylvania and organized a health program for its residents; sent editors to testify before the United Nations; and began recruiting legislators in Congress to create an Office of Men's Health within the National Institutes of Health.
